Personal entry: Snow Day

Snow Day! Due to the 15” of powder outside, I don’t have to go in until later, if at all. This is a mixed blessing, as servers 6-12 are in need of daily babying, and if I’m home, I can’t clean them up. This especially could be a problem because, by all accounts, tomorrow should be a big processing day, and could just cripple the servers.

On a non-snow note, My Seti at home has finally hit the 1000 mark. If you don’t know what that is, Seti@home is a screensaver/program that uses your computer’s idle cycles to process recorded data from a radio telescope. There are over 4,000,000 users, and this is considered the world’s largest supercomputer.

The idea is called “distributed computing” and it’s revolutionized the way science does some projects. Instead of buying some huge Cray system, they can just distribute the data to a 1000 or million PC’s, and receive better results. The Seti@home project is winding down now, after running for over four years, but there are plans in the works for a second version of it soon.

Probably add more later…
