Political Action: Virtual March on Washington

Moveon.org is sponsoring a virtual march on Washington to protest Gulf War part II. Sign up, it's protesting without having to put on long underware.

Suggested Reading: Very Very Happy

With 1,000 hits in it's first WEEK of existance, this is one to watch.

He suggests many other sites as well, which have become part of my daily reading assignment. Look for Orcinus , Scumbuster's Super Blog , and Take Back The Media in a browser near you.

Fashon: Meat Hat

I'm very disappointed in myself that I diddn't come up with this. Maybe The Meatstack and Hats of Meat can form a partnership.

Ego run amok: Zach Detton: Computer Genius

Hate to bust the guy...No, I take that back, I don't. If you are going to name your Blog Zach Detton: Computer Genius, you had best not have it link to a 404 page not found.

Idiotic Lawsuit Commentary (Brief): Who?

Wouldn’t people have to know who Dave Mirra is for his image to be damaged by Acclaim?

Quickie Movie Review: Trainspotting

This movie can be summed up with one Sentence…

“What the Hell did he say?”

Seriously, I like a story about overcoming smack addiction as much as the next guy, and Ewen McGregor played a good junky. His diatribe about why Scotland sucks was hysterical. It’s foreign, so you are supposed to look past the STRONG accent. But I had to watch this one with “Subtitles for the Hearing impaired on.”

This is one to watch, but don’t try to do anything else while viewing it. It will require your full attention.

Three Netflix stars.

Site Information: Template change, and modified.

Ok, I got rid of the "rainbow bright" template, and used something better suited to my style. The truth is that I "broke" the last one, and couldn't figure out how to fix it.

For those among us with not so good eyes, I increased the font sizes. I added a counter and put it at the top. I have changed the properties of that to better match the page.

Opinion: Liberal Talk Radio?

It was recently reported in the NY Times that the Democratic Party is planning on investing on the hopes of starting a Liberal talk radio network. The hopes are a series of programs to counteract the conservative talk radio hosts currently dominating America’s AM radio dials.

I’m sitting here scratching my head over this one. The very definition of conservatism is, as cut and paste right here: “3: the tendency to prefer an existing or traditional situation to change.” Naturally, these people would flock to the 50’s technology of amplitude modulation radio.

Creating a Liberal radio network is just butting heads with a 500 pound gorilla. Drudge, Limbaugh, Reagan, and Beck have been playing this game for a while. Their listeners are established, have made up their minds, and are not going to be swayed by some newcomer.

So, what I propose is that these people look to a medium that is better suited for their audience. What I’m suggesting can be just as daunting, probably just as expensive, but in the end, far more effective than throwing money into an AM hole.

I suggest an internet site, a “mega-site” if you will. This site will host commentary, webcasts, and archives pushing the liberal message. Its audience will find the delivery method far more reliable, and far savvier than AM. It’s forward thinking.

Web content sites have been tough to draw a profit on. Just look at the demise of the dot.com era to see examples of that. But, if you have a focused, centralized forum for liberal commentators, thinkers, and speakers, combine it with advertising focused for that demographic, and provide the bells and whistles that the consumer wants, I would think it’s hard to fail. Once established, then fight the conservative radio fight.

It’s a plan that works. Matt Drudge started with a simple website. He then branched out to a radio show based on the popularity of that site. AM radio would be rough. It’d be nice to have a “built-in” audience going into it.

Personal entry: Snow Day

Snow Day! Due to the 15” of powder outside, I don’t have to go in until later, if at all. This is a mixed blessing, as servers 6-12 are in need of daily babying, and if I’m home, I can’t clean them up. This especially could be a problem because, by all accounts, tomorrow should be a big processing day, and could just cripple the servers.

On a non-snow note, My Seti at home has finally hit the 1000 mark. If you don’t know what that is, Seti@home is a screensaver/program that uses your computer’s idle cycles to process recorded data from a radio telescope. There are over 4,000,000 users, and this is considered the world’s largest supercomputer.

The idea is called “distributed computing” and it’s revolutionized the way science does some projects. Instead of buying some huge Cray system, they can just distribute the data to a 1000 or million PC’s, and receive better results. The Seti@home project is winding down now, after running for over four years, but there are plans in the works for a second version of it soon.

Probably add more later…

Personal entry: Computer upgrade

It’s a little later in the night now, and the snow is still coming pretty good. By my unscientific measuring (taking a wooden spoon, and poking the top of the AC unit) it looks like slightly over a foot now. Not a lot for Johnstown PA, but a good bit (the most I’ve ever seen) here in Columbus Ohio.

Another thing about me…I’m a flight sim junkie. Mostly, I’m using MS’s Flight Simulator 2002 Pro, but recently I picked up a copy of Coastal Heroes: Search and Rescue 4. It’s not bad, but my poor computer just can’t handle the graphics. That’s where Krazy Kenny comes in.

Krazy Kenny is a computer parts store here in Columbus. I ordered a Case, MOBO, and AMD XP 2000 Proc. I’ll strip the rest of the parts out of my current machine, and should be able to get a better benchmark score. For benchmarking, I suggest a little program called “Performance Test ver. 4.0” by Passmark Software. My current box (PIII550 w/512mb ram) ranks an 86. My second computer ranks a 47 (PII 400). The new box should put me into the 110’s, at least.

I’m out of smokes. I guess I’m going to have to go out in this after all.

Personal Entry: Introduction

It’s Sunday, February 16th, and we here in Central Ohio are getting pummeled by snow. What better time than now to start what I’ve been wanting to do for a while, that being my blog.

Why blog? That’s the question my wife would ask if she knew I was doing this. Well, I’ve been keeping a journal for a while now (women would call this a diary). The idea behind this is just to keep my writing skills up to par. As a one-time contributor to the now defunct themestream, I miss having an easy place to dump my brain so that others may review it.

If you care, I’m 29, married, with a dog, and a cat, live in Central Ohio, and work in the technology field. When I’m not on a computer at work, I’m on a computer at home, doing things like this. I’m a news junkie, a trait I attribute to my six years as a writer and photojournalist for a news paper, and then later a TV station, in Central PA. As such, I tend to occasionally draw strong feelings about things that are happening in the world.

That being said, arguments, discussions, and ideas can be sent to my email address, mstack@columbus.rr.nospam.com

Regards.
